Seeing someone else displaying compassion, love, and grace gives our heart permission to open, and we embrace that authentic person for their courage. This is the practice of the conscious leader.
Authenticity, as much as anything, generates love in the hearts of others because it fills such a deep human need. With it, we can build relationships and inspire one another and our communities, families, friends, customer, colleagues, and suppliers. The opportunities for increased revenues, be it physical, mental or emotional ‘revenues’, are obvious.
What is authenticity?
When we are authentic, our minds, mouths, hearts and our feet are one. We think, feel, say and do the same thing in complete alignment. This is how we become real: by ensuring that what our minds think, what our hearts feel, what our mouths speak, and where our feet walk are one and the same. As we learnt from Machiavelli, we will remain inauthentic as long as we practice separateness between what we think, say, feel and do.
The four personal powers
Humans have four personal powers, two internal and two external powers. Our emotions and thoughts are our internal powers and our words and actions are our external powers. You have the last say over what you feel, think, say and do. If our four personal powers are in alignment we practice authenticity.
Being authentic requires us to be humble, to accept our weaknesses or imperfections and take responsibility for our personal powers. When we are consciously thinking, feeling, saying and doing the same thing in all aspects of our lives – as leaders, of course, but also as parents, children, friends, and spouses we are fully living an authentic life.
Any relationship is enhanced, enriched and often made whole, through authenticity. Indeed, it is the alignment of all these aspects that enables us to experience this sense of oneness.
